Coppin State Expands National Reach, Building West Coast Pipeline to Baltimore’s Hometown University
Two-day Los Angeles summit connects California students to Coppin’s proven model of access, achievement, and career success
LOS ANGELES, CA — Coppin State University continues to expand its national footprint, bringing the power and promise of an HBCU education directly to the West Coast through its “West Baltimore Meets West Coast Summit.” The two-day initiative, held in Los Angeles, created new pathways for California students to access Coppin’s academic programs, supportive community, and career-driven outcomes.
While Historically Black Colleges and Universities represent just a small fraction of institutions nationwide, they continue to produce a significant share of Black college graduates. Yet for many students in California, direct access to HBCUs has remained limited. Coppin State University is working to close that gap by meeting students where they are and building intentional, sustainable pipelines to opportunity.
“This is a national conversation about access and equity,” said Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins, president of Coppin State University. “The talent across California is undeniable, but too many students have never been meaningfully connected to the opportunities HBCUs provide. At Coppin State University, we continue to be the example taking action to change that by building clear pathways for students to experience an affordable quality education, transform their lives, and thrive.”
President Jenkins led a strategic roundtable at Disney Studios in Burbank, where educators, corporate leaders, and community partners explored ways to expand the Coppin State pathway for students across California. The discussion focused on strengthening recruitment pipelines from high schools and community colleges, as well as developing partnerships that support upward economic mobility for students.
“This work directly supports our vision to become a university of choice and to improve student outcomes by expanding access to students who are ready to transform their lives through a quality education,” Jenkins said. “We are not waiting for students to find Coppin State. As the fastest growing university in greater Baltimore, we are bringing Coppin State to them.”
The initiative culminated in a cultural reception in Los Angeles that celebrated the legacy, pride, and impact of Coppin State. In partnership with community organizations and national leaders, the event brought together alumni, influencers, and supporters to showcase the transformative experience that defines Coppin State.
Beyond recruitment, the West Coast expansion reinforces Coppin State’s commitment to strengthening its brand as a leader in urban higher education while enhancing teaching, learning, and workforce alignment. By establishing a presence in new regions, the university continues to create opportunities for students to succeed academically, professionally, and personally.
“As we expand our reach, we are also strengthening the environments where our students learn and grow,” Jenkins added. “This is about building a future where access is not determined by geography, household income, or zip code, but rather it's about working to ensure every student has the opportunity to reach their full potential.”
Coppin State University’s West Coast initiative represents a bold step forward in advancing equity, expanding opportunity, and delivering on its mission to transform lives through education.
